EXPANSION AND INTERIORIZATION OF THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF PIAUÍ (UFPI) IN THE PERIOD FROM 2006 TO 2008

Abstract

This article analyzes the implementation of the Expansion Plan of the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), developed between 2006 and 2008, in the context of the institution's adherence to the Federal University Expansion Program, promoted by the federal government. Using a qualitative approach, based on documentary and bibliographic research, the article examines the extent to which the proposed goals and objectives, with emphasis on the expansion of course offerings and the internalization of higher education, were effectively achieved. The work is a summary of chapter 4 of the doctoral thesis “Expansion and Restructuring Programs of Federal Universities: an analysis of UFPI from 2003 to 2016” (Carvalho, 2019) and is organized into three analytical sections, in addition to the introduction, methodology, and final considerations. The first historically contextualizes the creation and consolidation of UFPI; the second presents the foundations, goals, and actions of the Expansion Plan (2006–2008); and the third analyzes the results obtained from institutional data, such as number of courses, enrollments, hiring of faculty and expansion of postgraduate studies. The results indicate the asymmetrical fulfillment of most goals and objectives.
