REFEREES WORKING IN PROFESSIONAL FIELD FOOTBALL: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ROLE

Referees in professional soccer not only officiate matches between two opposing teams, but also deal with a vast network of interests including organizers, sponsors, managers, media, and fans. The objective of this study was to understand the importance of referees in professional soccer through bibliographic analysis. This is an integrative and exploratory literature review that used articles from recent years, without a time limit, resulting in a sample of six articles. The results showed that the importance of the referee transcends the simple application of the rules of the game, being fundamental to maintaining integrity and fairness in soccer. Furthermore, their performance directly impacts not only the outcome of matches, but also the experience of fans and the credibility of the sport. It is concluded that the referee is fundamental to maintaining fair play, but that in the face of challenges (such as conflicts during matches), it is necessary for them to have increasingly higher professional qualifications and psychological support.
