NURSING CARE IN THE PUERPERIUM IN THE PROMOTION OF MENTAL HEALTH

The puerperium is a period marked by intense physiological, hormonal, emotional, and social changes and is recognized as a stage of high vulnerability to psychological distress, anxiety, and postpartum depression. In this context, nursing care plays a fundamental role in promoting the mental health of puerperal women through welcoming practices, qualified listening, health education, early identification of psychological distress, and timely referral to the care network. This study aimed to analyze nursing care during the puerperium focused on promoting women’s mental health. This is an integrative literature review conducted in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Virtual Health Library (VHL), Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), PubMed, and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) databases, including studies published between 2016 and 2026. The PiCo strategy consisted of P (puerperal women), I (nursing care), and Co (promotion of mental health during the puerperium). After applying the eligibility criteria and excluding review articles, 12 primary studies composed the final sample. The findings showed that socioeconomic vulnerability, lack of social support, violence, maternal overload, working conditions, and previous history of mental disorders are associated with psychological illness during the puerperium. Nursing care contributes to the prevention of mental health problems, strengthening of the mother-child bond, and promotion of maternal well-being. It is concluded that nursing care is essential for promoting mental health during the puerperium, requiring the implementation of humanized, qualified, systematic, and evidence-based practices.
