THE ROLE OF NURSES IN PROMOTING THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL COMFORT OF TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS IN HOSPITAL UNITS

Palliative care constitutes an essential approach in healthcare, aimed at promoting the quality of life of terminally ill patients through the relief of suffering and the control of physical, emotional, social, and spiritual symptoms. In this context, nursing care stands out due to its close relationship with the patient, enabling the identification of needs and the implementation of interventions focused on comfort and dignity during the finitude of life. This study aims to analyze the interventions performed by nurses to promote physical and emotional comfort in terminally ill patients hospitalized in healthcare units. This is an integrative literature review conducted in the databases BVS, BDENF, MEDLINE, and SciELO, considering articles published between 2016 and 2026, available in full text and in Portuguese. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 45 studies were identified, of which 12 composed the final sample. The results showed that the main nursing interventions include pain management, symptom control, emotional support, effective communication with patients and families, and the promotion of humanized care. The analysis of the studies demonstrated the relevance of nurses in ensuring physical and emotional comfort, contributing to patient dignity. It is concluded that evidence-based practice strengthens the quality of palliative care assistance.
