IMPACT OF SMOKING ON THE INFLAMMATORY AND STRUCTURAL PROGRESSION OF CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) constitutes an important public health problem, characterized by persistent airflow limitation and mainly associated with smoking, considered the main risk factor for its development and clinical worsening. The study aims to describe the impact of smoking on the inflammatory and structural progression of COPD, highlighting its influence on pulmonary function impairment and on the clinical evolution of the disease. Therefore, a descriptive literature review with a qualitative approach was carried out through searches in electronic databases and institutional documents, considering publications from 2020 to 2025. Thus, it was observed that continuous exposure to cigarette smoke promotes persistent inflammatory activation, alveolar destruction, and airway remodeling, contributing to airflow limitation and worsening respiratory symptoms. It is concluded that smoking plays a central role in the progression of COPD, making the adoption of prevention strategies, smoking cessation, and early diagnosis essential.
