Bone reconstruction in the maxillofacial region has always been a challenge for dentistry. Autogenous grafts are considered the gold standard for this type of reconstruction. However, their often complex procurement process, coupled with the high morbidity associated with the procedure, has led to the search for and development of new grafting methods and materials. With advances in technology and molecular studies, BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) have gained prominence due to their osteoinductive capacity. In the laboratory, BMPs are produced for commercialization and are now widely used in dentistry for bone grafting procedures. Their mechanism of action is not yet fully elucidated by science, and their use still presents controversies regarding their efficacy, limitations, and clinical applications. Thus, this study aimed to conduct a literature review on BMPs and their use in dentistry, in order to analyze their applicability, efficacy, mechanism of action, and possible limitations. This is a qualitative, descriptive scientific literature review, conducted through exploratory bibliographic research in databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Lilacs, and Scielo. The mechanism of action, applicability, efficacy, and limitations of using bone morphogenetic proteins in grafting processes were addressed and explored in order to provide current and crucial information about their use in daily dental practice.
