This opinion article provides an analysis of the short story "The Third Bank of the River" by João Guimarães Rosa, highlighting the literary and symbolic elements of this magnificent work. The theoretical framework cites Cosson (2018), Moisés (2014), Galvão (1978), and Marchini (2016), which assist in understanding the complexity of Rosa's literature in its representation. Initially, the text contextualizes the author's biography and the cultural aspects that influenced his writing. Subsequently, in the analysis of the story, the unique use of neologisms, regionalisms, and metaphysical themes is emphasized, as well as the metaphors of the "canoe" and the "river," symbols of finitude and continuity. Rosa addresses the third bank as a space that transcends the real, challenging the reader to explore the indefinable. The relationship between father and son in the story is marked by bonds of love and guilt, revealing the conflict between the human and the eternal. Ultimately, the work offers multiple interpretations, establishing a profound connection between narrative and identity.
