ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE ON THE PRACTICE OF SHANTALA

Shantala is an integrative and complementary practice available in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) and is a massage technique that offers various health benefits for children. Despite its ancient origins, it is little known and disseminated by professionals in child healthcare, sometimes due to the lack of a standardized protocol for the therapy. Therefore, this text reports on the experience of developing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the practice of Shantala, aiming to standardize and ensure the safe application of the technique in healthcare settings. This is an experience report describing the process of developing a Standard Operating Procedure for the Shantala technique, created in partnership between the LAPPIS and NASCER Programs of the Federal University of São João del-Rei. The process resulted in the creation of a detailed instrument that guides and describes the Shantala technique, serving as a practical and accessible tool for healthcare professionals, parents, and caregivers, promoting the safety of the therapy. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will assist professionals in applying Shantala massage, both in providing care to babies and in teaching the practice so that family members can perform the massage at home, comfortably and safely.
