The present study explores the incidence and risk factors associated with postoperative infections in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA), a fundamental surgical procedure for the treatment of advanced osteoarthritis. The research was motivated by the observation that post-TKA infections (TKAI), although rare, represent serious complications that can significantly affect the patient's recovery and quality of life. The main objective was to identify the main risk factors associated with these infections, contributing to the development of more effective preventive strategies. The methodology adopted consisted of a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients who underwent TKA in a reference hospital over a period of six years. Aspects such as age, gender, comorbidities, lifestyle and details of the surgical procedure were analyzed in 239 patients where eight periprosthetic infections occurred (2.93% of primary TKA). Data analysis revealed a higher incidence of infections in patients with comorbidities such as hypertension (85.7% of infected patients) and obesity (71.4% of patients), while diabetes and rheumatic diseases did not prove to be risk factors. preponderant. Surgery time was notably important (42.9% of patients with infection had primary surgical times greater than 120 minutes). The conclusions point to the complexity of the risk profile of TKAI, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach to prevention and treatment. Level of Evidence IV, Case Series.
