Abstract

The toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) is the largest species of the Ramphastidae family and is widely distributed throughout South America. Knowledge about anatomical and pathological aspects of this species is essential for wildlife veterinary medicine and conservation programs. The aim of this study was to perform a literature review on morphological and anatomopathological studies involving the toco toucan. Scientific databases such as SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar were consulted. Studies describing anatomical, morphometric, and pathological features of the species or other Ramphastidae birds were selected. The literature indicates that R. toco presents remarkable morphological adaptations, particularly related to the skull, bill, and digestive tract, which are associated with feeding behavior and thermoregulation. Although anatomical descriptions have advanced, detailed anatomopathological studies in this species remain scarce. Expanding research in necropsy and histopathology is essential to improve knowledge about diseases affecting wild birds and to support wildlife veterinary medicine.
