Abstract

Environmental Education (EE) is an essential tool for building sustainable societies, with children and adolescents acting as agents of change. This systematic literature review aimed to analyze the impacts, strategies, and role of funding in EE initiatives targeting this population. The method consisted of searching and analyzing scientific articles published between 2021 and 2025 in the Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases, resulting in the inclusion of 21 studies for qualitative synthesis. The findings were organized into four thematic categories: (1) Youth participation and co-production, highlighting the protagonism of young people in shaping narratives and policies; (2) Environmental attitude, knowledge, and behavior, highlighting the influence of diverse pedagogical methodologies; (3) Practical environmental education and participatory programs, which strengthen skills and civic engagement; and (4) Funding and resources, whose availability is important for the effectiveness and sustainability of the programs. It was concluded that environmental education is effective in promoting sustainable attitudes and behaviors, but its success is linked to the integration of participatory approaches, sensitivity to the sociocultural context, and, above all, the existence of adequate funding and consistent public policies. The study reinforced the need for continuous investment and articulated strategies to consolidate environmental education as a central axis for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 (Quality Education), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action).
