Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The color stability of composite resins is an essential factor for the esthetic success of direct restorations in Dentistry. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the color changes of composite resins after exposure to food-coloring solutions, as well as to analyze the influence of finishing and polishing on staining resistance and on the durability of restorative material properties. METHODS: A total of 100 composite resin specimens were fabricated and divided into groups according to the coloring solution used (açaí, red wine, cola soft drink, artificial saliva, and soy sauce) and whether polishing was performed. The samples were immersed in the solutions for predetermined periods, and color measurements were taken using spectrophotometry at different time points. RESULTS: The results showed that all coloring solutions caused some degree of resin darkening over time. The group exposed to açaí exhibited the highest color change values, although without statistically significant differences compared with the other solutions. Artificial saliva yielded the best results, with the least chromatic alteration, especially in the polished samples. Furthermore, the specimens that underwent polishing showed lower levels of color change compared with those that did not, highlighting the importance of this procedure in maintaining the esthetic and functional integrity of restorations. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the type of coloring solution, exposure time, and the performance of polishing influence the color stability of composite resin, with the coloring solution alone not being a determining factor in color stability. The results reinforce the importance of finishing and polishing in the longevity of restorative materials.
