COMPETITIVE JUSTICE VERSUS SOCIAL INCLUSION: A NARRATIVE REVIEW ON THE FUTURE OF WOMEN'S SPORT

Abstract

This article, in the format of a narrative literature review, explores one of the most sensitive and complex issues in contemporary sport: the participation of transgender women in elite female competitions. The debate places in collision two fundamental values: the right to inclusion and the pursuit of competitive fairness. Through an analysis of recent publications (2016-2026) from Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia, this work explores the scientific, human, ethical, and legal dimensions of the problem. Scientific evidence, although evolving, points to the mitigation of physiological advantages with hormone therapy, but organizations such as the British Women in Sport present robust data on residual advantages that raise serious questions about equity. This article does not seek a definitive answer, but rather to map the terrain, and shed light on the debate beyond the numbers, and offer a thoughtful reflection on possible paths toward a future where women’s sport is both fair and welcoming.
