THE IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN NURSES AND PATIENTS

Communication is an essential tool in health care, especially in nursing practice, which involves a direct, continuous and often intimate relationship with the patient. Objective: To analyze the importance of effective communication between nurses and patients in the hospital context, as well as to review the communication practices of nursing that contribute to the quality of care provided. Material and method: This is an integrative literature review. To outline the theme and the study question, the PICO method was applied, a mnemonic for identifying key topics: Population/problem, intervention, comparison and outcome. Results and discussion: We identified 168 records in the databases among BdEnf, Lilacs and Scielo, which resulted in 83 after the analysis of the titles, of which 26 articles were repeated, the rest due to lack of criteria, thus composing a sample of 29 articles that answer the question proposed in the research. The analysis of the studies included in the review shows that effective communication between nurses and patients is a central element for the quality of care, patient safety and the humanization of care. Conclusion: We can conclude that promoting effective communication encompasses care in its entirety, considering not only the clinical aspects, but also the emotional and subjective aspects of the human being in suffering. Investing in this competence is investing in quality, safe and patient-centered health.
