STRUCTURAL AND ARBORISTIC ANALYSIS OF SQUARES IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF CORONEL FABRICIANO (MG)

This study is justified by the importance of urban squares as multifunctional spaces that contribute to the population’s quality of life, environmental preservation, and the cultural appreciation of the municipality. By identifying the current situation and possible gaps in the arborization and infrastructure of these areas, the research aims to support public managers and urban planners in decision-making, encouraging more effective management and planning policies. The research adopts a quali-quantitative approach, configured as a documental and case study. The bibliographic review was based on books, scientific articles, and legislation addressing urban arborization, the importance of public squares, and urban planning. The documental analysis involved consulting the Municipal Master Plan of Coronel Fabriciano to understand the local guidelines for urban and environmental management. The results revealed heterogeneity among the analyzed squares, especially regarding infrastructure, arborization, and accessibility. Louis Ensch Square showed better planning and maintenance, while Praça da Estação, despite being an important cultural landmark, presented deficiencies in arborization, shade availability, and urban equipment. A predominance of exotic species over native ones was observed, compromising biodiversity and local ecosystem services. It is concluded that the squares of Coronel Fabriciano play an essential role in the city’s social and environmental integration but lack public policies that prioritize landscape planning and the use of native species, ensuring greater thermal comfort, sustainability, and quality of life for the population.
