Megaprojects have multiplied globally, becoming a recurrent phenomenon widely promoted as a driver of economic and social development. However, their implementation has generated controversy, particularly regarding their actual impacts on the quality of life of local communities. Considering that quality of life is a multidimensional concept that is difficult to measure, this paper aims to understand the real effects of the Nacala Corridor megaproject on the population of the district of Nacala-a-Velha, contributing to the debate on public policies that are more sensitive to territorial and social specificities. The research is based on an exploratory literature review, guided by the interpretative paradigm and supported by a qualitative approach, which allows for the analysis of perceptions, experiences, and empirical evidence related to the megaproject. The results indicate that, although the Nacala Corridor has the potential to promote local development and generate economic benefits, its effects on local communities have been contradictory, revealing significant challenges in the social, economic, and environmental dimensions. It is concluded that the positive and sustainable impact of the Nacala Corridor depends on the effective integration of the population’s needs and expectations into the implementation process, through inclusive public policies, continuous participation mechanisms, and equitable investments in infrastructure, health, education, and economic opportunities.
