QUALITY ASSESSMENT AND COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CLINICAL PROTOCOLS FOR ADULTS LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS

The continuous updating of clinical protocols for HIV is essential in light of advances in antiretroviral therapy. Evaluating the quality and applicability of these documents contributes to the improvement of clinical practices and care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Thus, a bibliographic survey was conducted of clinical guidelines related to the treatment of HIV infection in adults in different countries, in Europe, and by the World Health Organization. Subsequently, an assessment of quality was performed and the preferred treatments defined in the documents were compared. Methods: Using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool, the eight selected protocols were evaluated by two different evaluators independently, following the guidelines in the tool's manual. The scores assigned were entered into specific digital forms and then compiled into tables for better visualization. The following simple averages for protocol adequacy were found: 87.4% for the US protocol, 87% for the British protocol, 86.3% for the World Health Organization protocol, 75.2% for the European protocol, 66.2% for the Brazilian protocol, 65.1% for the South African protocol, 60% for the Spanish protocol, and 50.9% for the Chinese protocol. It was found that the development of clinical guidelines around the world does not follow the same quality standards established by AGREE II. It is important to emphasize that protocols enable healthcare professionals to provide clinical care that maximizes favorable outcomes in public health.
