WOMEN WITH OSTOMIES: ATTENTION AND CARE THROUGH HOME VISITS

Abstract

Introduction: Ostomy is a surgical opening that connects the internal and external environments, which can be respiratory, alimentary, or for elimination purposes. Depending on the therapeutic need, it can be temporary or permanent, commonly due to colorectal cancer or inflammatory bowel diseases. Patients face psychoemotional and self-care challenges, exacerbated by postoperative complications. In this context, nursing home visits are essential to promote adaptation and improve the quality of life of ostomized individuals. Objective: To describe how nursing home visits impact the adaptation process and quality of life of an ostomized patient. Method: This qualitative study, based on a single case study, describes the home care provided to an ostomized person. Aiming to capture the subjectivity and meaning of the human experience, the research explores, in detail, a contemporary phenomenon in its real context to broaden understanding of the subject. Discussion: The care of ostomized patients requires a multidisciplinary approach and educational actions to promote autonomy and adaptation, especially in the postoperative period. Inclusion in the Ostomized Person Care Network and follow-up by nurses are essential to ensure continuous support, prevent complications, and strengthen rehabilitation and quality of life in the home environment. Conclusion: It is concluded that the case study highlighted the progression of care for the ostomized individual in the home environment and the gaps in care and guidance experienced by them throughout their therapeutic journey within the municipal healthcare network, the nurse's assistance is essential to promote autonomy, quality of life, and adaptation for ostomized women. Educational actions, psychological support, and continuous follow-up strengthen self-esteem, prevent complications, and facilitate social reintegration, highlighting the nurse's role in the success of rehabilitation.
