PEDRÃO'S ENCOURADOS AS AN EXPRESSION OF ART: A SELECTION OF PAINTINGS OF HISTORICAL SUBJECTS AND ICONOGRAPHIC BODIES

Abstract

The iconography of the man dressed in leather armor in the Northeast of Brazil is a visual representation that reflects the culture and history of the Brazilian population associated with the moment of the struggle for Brazilian independence in Bahia. This article aimed to explore the understanding of art in a selection of the iconography of the encourado in different historical moments. Specifically, it reflected on pictorial compositions represented in Bahian painting, in different approaches, as well as on its importance in the construction of the iconography of the representative of the people. Historical and qualitative research was privileged. A selection of certain artistic works was carried out based on the body iconographies represented in them. The proposed discussion was carried out based on conjectures that were idealized and developed historically. As results, it pointed out the exploration of the plastic and historical potential in the narrative of construction of the historical subject and the perspective of art as a possibility of forming critical and emancipated consciousness. From the possible conclusions, we highlight the importance of artistic expressions such as paintings of historical subjects and iconographic bodies from the northeast of Brazil in the broader educational process and from a critical perspective, as well as in the formation for human and social emancipation.
