Introduction: Medical training imposes high emotional and cognitive demands, resulting in a high prevalence of Common Mental Disorders (CMD) among students. Factors such as excessive academic workload, sleep deprivation, and the stigma associated with seeking psychological help contribute to the worsening of this scenario. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced new challenges, including social isolation and the adoption of remote learning. Objective: To identify factors related to the development of mental disorders in medical students throughout their academic trajectory. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted through searches in the Lilacs, BDENF, and PubMed databases. The study included articles published in English and Portuguese between 2020 and 2024. Paid articles, duplicates, and review studies were excluded. Data extraction was performed based on the analysis of titles, abstracts, and study results. Results: The analyzed studies demonstrated that academic overload, sleep deprivation, and unhealthy lifestyles are highly relevant factors in the development of psychological disorders. Increased vulnerability was observed among women and students with a prior psychiatric history. Furthermore, the social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic intensified these factors, highlighting the influence of restrictive measures and changes in teaching patterns on the rise of mental disorders. Conclusion: The studies evidenced the need to implement institutional strategies focused on promoting the mental health of medical students, including the expansion of psychological support and the encouragement of self-care practices, aiming to improve the quality of academic life.
