Considering that sustainability is a global imperative requiring the integration of economic, environmental, and social dimensions in organizations, this integration is crucial for Project Management (PM), but faces challenges, mainly due to the skills gap and the absence of holistic approaches in current standards. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the challenges and possibilities of implementing sustainability principles in PM and their impacts on project success. This article presents the results of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) conducted in relevant databases. The search used the string “sustainability principles” AND “project management” for articles published between 2015 and 2020. The results confirm that sustainability contributes to project success. However, the main barrier identified is the lack of knowledge and experience of stakeholders, leading to the conclusion that incorporating sustainability requires a cultural shift and the development of new skills in project managers, being a critical factor for organizational competitiveness and effectiveness.
