REEMERGENCE OF MEASLES AND POLIO IN BRAZIL: CONSEQUENCES OF THE DECLINE IN CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATION RATES

The reemergence of measles and poliomyelitis in Brazil represents a public health setback that evidences the progressive collapse of childhood immunization rates. This study analyzes the relationship between declining vaccination coverage and the reemergence of these vaccine-preventable diseases, identifying determining factors and implications for public health. The research is characterized as quantitative, descriptive, and analytical, with an ecological time-series design, using data from the National Immunization Program Information System and the Notifiable Diseases Information System between 2015 and 2024. Results reveal a decline of 24.7 percentage points in vaccination coverage for measles and 29.4 percentage points for poliomyelitis during the analyzed period. The analysis identifies marked regional heterogeneities, with the North and Northeast regions presenting the lowest coverage rates, and a statistically significant association between low vaccination coverage and higher measles incidence. It is concluded that the reemergence of vaccine-preventable diseases results from the complex interaction between underfunding of the Unified Health System, weakening of primary care, dissemination of misinformation, and erosion of trust in scientific institutions. The study contributes to the formulation of evidence-based public policies that promote recovery of vaccination coverage and childhood protection.
