This study analyzes the socioproductive dynamics and systemic sustainability of a waste pickers’ cooperative operating in a medium-sized municipality in the state of São Paulo, with particular emphasis on its operational, environmental, and social outcomes. The investigation employed a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory design based on a single case study supported by direct observation, documentary analysis, and administrative and operational records gathered between January and July 2024. Data triangulation and thematic saturation ensured analytical robustness. Quantitative findings reveal the cooperative’s significant productivity: monthly processing levels ranged from 28 to 32 tons of recyclable materials, preventing an estimated 35 to 40 tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions per month. Economically, monthly revenues fluctuated between R$ 25,000 and R$ 45,000, with operational costs of R$ 12,000 to R$ 20,000, resulting in average individual earnings of approximately R$ 1,300 to R$ 1,500. Socially, the cooperative provides formal income opportunities for around 45 workers and develops community-based educational activities that reach more than one thousand people annually. Beyond its productive role, the cooperative demonstrates strong community engagement through environmental education and collective decision-making practices. The integrated analysis indicates that this organizational model successfully merges operational efficiency, positive environmental performance, and social inclusion, although its long-term sustainability remains constrained by structural limitations and irregular institutional support. The findings highlight the cooperative’s importance as a key actor in local circular-economy practices and in the sustainable management of urban solid waste.
