This cross-sectional observational study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with postoperative complications. The research was based on secondary data obtained from the hospital system, including information regarding sex, age, date of care, and codes from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). A total of 198,442 records were analyzed, of which 12.2% corresponded to factors influencing health status, according to Chapter XXI of the ICD-10. A predominance of females (64.2%) was observed, with a higher concentration of care in middle-aged adults (32.2%) and young elderly individuals (25.7%). The association between the outcome of interest and the variables sex, age group, and month of care was statistically significant (p < 0.001). These findings highlight the importance of accurate coding and continuous monitoring of postoperative complications, especially in university institutions, where the integration between teaching and care directly influences the quality of care. It is concluded that early recognition and systematic monitoring of surgical complications are fundamental for improving healthcare practices and reducing hospital risks.
