Abstract

We understand that one of the ways of teaching language is to promote critical thinking through reading texts that contemplate social realities, including those that present humor as a means of denouncing diverse realities. Therefore, this article reflects on the possibilities of teaching the Portuguese language through the use of texts that offer social criticism but are imbued with humor. The construction of citizenship and critical thinking is the focus of teaching the mother tongue, since we are increasingly immersed in a range of (un)true information and we need to understand, through language, the nuances of what is said. Based on this principle, we discuss the relevance of humor in unveiling and unmasking social realities based on the postulates of Ramos (2017); Magalhães (2010); Possenti (2013); Ramos and Vergueiro (2015). The reflections found in this article encourage thinking about the texts we bring to the classroom and their contributions to promoting teaching committed to addressing socially relevant topics and citizenship education.
