Abstract

Violence in marital relationships is a multifaceted phenomenon of high social relevance, profoundly affecting the lives of countless women, and most often occurring in the domestic environment. This violence can be considered a legacy left by patriarchy, as a social and cultural system, often understood as a historical and symbolic structure that organizes power relations between genders, privileging men and subordinating women. Therefore, this article aims to discuss violence in marital relationships as a persistent hallmark of patriarchy. Understanding these historical roots is crucial to challenging current power structures and promoting meaningful change toward gender equality. The results indicate that confronting patriarchy requires a broad and profound restructuring of power systems, such as the creation of public policies that take into account different experiences of oppression, as well as the promotion of spaces for dialogue and education that challenge patriarchal norms and encourage new practices of coexistence and equality.
