HEALTHCARE OF TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE: A STUDY IN LIGHT OF SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS THEORY

The aim was to apprehend the social representations built by trans people and healthcare professionals regarding the services provided by Primary Health Care. Semi-structured interviews and sociodemographic characterization of the respondents were conducted. Discourses were analyzed using the IRAMUTEQ software, through lexical analysis for Descending Hierarchical Classification. The study involved 24 trans individuals and 18 healthcare professionals working in Primary Health Care in the municipality of Eunápolis, Bahia. After lexical analysis among trans individuals, two categories emerged: 1) Social challenges associated with gender incongruence, and 2) Social representations regarding reception in the healthcare sector. Among healthcare professionals, four categories were identified: 1) Social challenges of gender: who are trans individuals; 2) Monitoring and healthcare treatment for trans individuals; 3) SUS duties and the role of health education; 4) Challenges of providing care to trans individuals in the healthcare sector. The evidence suggests that the social representations elaborated by both groups are anchored in prejudice, lack of reception, and ignorance about issues involving the health of trans individuals.
