This study looks at the transformations that have taken place in the configurations of riverside "dwelling" in the city of Belém, capital of the state of Pará. Surrounded by dozens of river islands, the city presents itself as a peninsula dividing its insular part between islands to the south and north. It is an important space for observing the transformations of modernity, ecological transitions and riverside ways of life. With a survey of secondary sources and studies that we have carried out, based on simple observation carried out in five backyards in Belém's insular areas, which serve as the basis for the analysis of this proposal, this article seeks to demonstrate that the phenomenon of urbanization has crossed the municipality's insular spaces, altering typically riverside socio-environmental dynamics, with the creation of new urban peripheries in the city, however, it has not extinguished these that are markedly an indigenous cultural heritage and the expression of riverside territoriality in the Amazon metropolis, the backyards.
