Abstract

Neutering is an alternative that acts in the population control of dogs and cats, in the prevention of zoonoses and mistreatment. However, this procedure requires financial expenses, which ends up making it unfeasible for some guardians. The objective was to assess the population regarding their socioeconomic status and knowledge regarding the free neutering offered in the state. The research was conducted in the state of Amapá, through consultation with dog and/or cat guardians, over 18 years of age. The methodology used was the application of online and in-person questionnaires. At the end of the research, a low socioeconomic status of the interviewees was observed, little knowledge about free neutering and a high number of unneutered animals. The reason for not neutering was linked to low socioeconomic status and the high cost of surgical and post-operative care, in addition to the fact that in municipalities far from the capital, greater limitations were observed both in terms of information and in carrying out the surgical procedure due to the low concentration of clinics and state resources for serving the public.
