Contact with literature is important in the critical construction of students’ knowledge about reflections on historical themes that are still relevant in the present. The process of decolonization occurs when we readapt the ideal imagined by the colonizer through the experiences of the native peoples from a new perspective. Based on this educational process, this work can reflect on the importance of theater as a methodological tool in the classroom, especially in public education in the Amazon context. In this sense, we bring together our focus on the interdisciplinarity between the Portuguese language and biology and the interculturality provided by cross-cutting themes about the rights of these peoples, especially the demarcation of indigenous lands. We present the development of learning throughout the didactic sequence in a project entitled “Scenes from the National Imagination”, and reflect on how the play “Juca Pirama: Between the Past and the Present” was fundamental for the artistic, etymological and cultural expression for the school community of the Dr. Isaac Sverner State School, located in the city of Manaus - Amazonas. Through pre-established steps and appropriate discussions, it was clear that the relationship between teaching literature, raising awareness of the struggles for the demarcation of indigenous lands and environmental preservation allowed for the necessary progress in the teaching-learning process. The result was a better understanding of the indigenous cause and a critical-reflective improvement of the reality that surrounds them beyond the classroom.
