The objective of this study was to identify in the Brazilian scientific literature what has been discussed about suicidal ideation among higher education students. The research was conducted using the State of the Art, based on the descriptors, suicidal ideation among university students and suicidal behaviors among university students, without an initial time frame, to identify the frequency of discussions on this topic. The searches were conducted between August 2019 and March 2020 in the Google Scholar repositories, Scientific Electronic Library Online and on the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences website. It was found that research on this topic in higher education is incipient and that the main factors that have caused suicidal ideation among students were low financial status of their families, feelings of loneliness and lack of belonging in relation to the university, use of alcohol and drugs and difficulties in adapting to the didactic-pedagogical demands imposed in the university environment.
