Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common form of anemia worldwide and represents a significant public health issue, particularly in developing countries. In the context of Primary Health Care (PHC), early recognition and proper management of iron deficiency are essential for preventing clinical complications and improving patients’ quality of life. This study aims to analyze, based on the most recent scientific evidence, the most effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for managing iron deficiency anemia in adults within PHC. It addresses pathophysiological aspects, such as the role of hepcidin in iron homeostasis regulation, laboratory criteria for differential diagnosis, and main therapeutic approaches, including oral and intravenous iron supplementation. The study emphasizes the importance of critically interpreting laboratory markers, especially in inflammatory conditions, and underscores the need for updated clinical protocols tailored to the realities of primary care. It is concluded that effective management of iron deficiency anemia requires an integrated, evidence-based, patient-centered approach aligned with the principles of continuous and comprehensive care in PHC.
