The increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters have heightened the need for comprehensive and integrated public health responses. In this context, physical therapy emerges as an essential practice for damage reduction and for supporting the recovery of affected populations. This study, conducted through a qualitative literature review, analyzed scientific publications and technical documents related to the role of physical therapy in emergencies and disasters. The findings indicate that the practice of physical therapy, by extending beyond conventional rehabilitation, contributes directly to maintaining functionality, preventing disabilities, and strengthening community health. A collective and interdisciplinary approach, supported by health surveillance and promotion practices, has proven fundamental in addressing the physical, emotional, and social impacts generated by disasters. The integration of physical therapy into response plans and civil defense systems remains a challenge, highlighting the need for public policies that recognize its strategic role. Investing in the specific training of physical therapists and fostering their participation in networks with other health and humanitarian sectors are essential steps toward establishing a more effective practice aligned with the principles of equity and comprehensive care. Physical therapy, by contributing to functional recovery and the promotion of community resilience, becomes an indispensable element in humanitarian response strategies and post-disaster reconstruction processes.
