This research addresses the theme of environmental education and solid waste management in the context of the Cristo Redentor Elementary School, with the purpose of assessing the students' prior knowledge. We used action research as a method, with a qualitative and quantitative approach, based on a bibliographic survey carried out in books, periodicals and scientific articles. The results show a significant gap in the students' knowledge, especially with regard to environmental legislation, waste classification and selective collection practices. We also identified the need to implement educational projects, interactive activities and lectures that encourage interest in sustainability. After the pedagogical intervention, we observed progress in learning and greater engagement of the students with the theme of solid waste and its environmental impacts.
