Abstract

The growing environmental degradation imposes on contemporary societies the need to rethink the cultural and institutional foundations that guide the relationship between human beings and the environment. This study comparatively analyzes the Japanese cultural model known as Mottainai and the environmental education policies in force in Brazil, focusing on convergences, divergences, and potentials for exchange between the two approaches. The research adopts a bibliographic methodology of a qualitative nature, with an exploratory and descriptive approach, supported by the analysis of national and international scientific literature. The results indicate that Mottainai operates as a philosophical and pedagogical principle integrated into Japanese daily life, while the Brazilian model is structured predominantly by legal frameworks, such as Law No. 9.795/1999. The comparison reveals that the incorporation of deep cultural values enhances the effectiveness of environmental education policies. The study concludes that the dialogue between cultural practices and legislation can broaden the reach and permanence of education for sustainability in both contexts.
