INTERNET OF MEDICAL THINGS (IOMT): THE USE OF WEARABLE DEVICES FOR REAL-TIME MONITORING OF CHRONIC PATIENTS

Abstract

Considering the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases and the need for strategies that extend continuous monitoring beyond the hospital environment, the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) emerges as a technological model structured on the integration of sensors, connectivity, and analytical processing. This study aims to analyze the use of wearable devices within the Internet of Medical Things for real-time monitoring of chronic patients. To this end, an integrative literature review was conducted, searching the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, and BVS databases from 2016 to 2026, using DeCS and MeSH descriptors related to Internet of Things, Wearable Devices, Remote Patient Monitoring, Chronic Disease, and Telemonitoring. Seven studies were included that addressed layered architecture, biomedical sensors, connectivity (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G), integration with machine learning, and aspects of digital security. It is observed that wearable devices enable continuous collection of physiological parameters, integration with cloud platforms, and support for clinical decision-making through predictive algorithms. It is concluded that IoMT, operationalized by wearables, represents a promising strategy for reorganizing longitudinal care, although challenges related to interoperability, information security, and large-scale clinical validation persist.
