Abstract

Ultra-processed foods are industrial products that receive various chemical (artificial) components or components extracted from foods, such as emulsifiers, colorings, flavorings, sugar, and hydrogenated fats. They have no nutritional function, but they give the foods appealing characteristics in terms of texture and taste. In this context, it is also valid to state that the population is highly accustomed to industrialized foods because they offer more convenience for daily life; however, this factor has alerted many researchers to the excessive consumption of these foods and their relationship with obesity. Indeed, it is common to observe that although whole foods need to be part of the Brazilian routine, their scarcity is increasingly noticeable, precisely because they do not meet the expectations of daily demand, thus requiring a reflective look at the subject. Based on this statement, the aforementioned research aims to investigate, through a literature review, the relationship between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and obesity in adults. For this research, a search was conducted for articles indexed in the Scielo and Pubmed databases, specifically studies published between 2015 and 2025. A total of five articles were included in the review. It was concluded that all articles show a consensus that ultra-processed foods have a strong correlation with obesity.
