The reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex is a crucial step in the breast rehabilitation process for women who have undergone mastectomy. This study aimed to analyze the clinical indications, available materials, and psychosocial benefits of using silicone areola prostheses through a qualitative literature review with a temporal scope from 2015 to 2024. The theoretical foundation was structured into three axes: indication criteria, description of materials and customization techniques, and the subjective effects related to the procedure. The results indicated that silicone areola prostheses are an effective alternative, especially in cases where grafts are contraindicated, previous reconstruction attempts have failed, or when the patient prefers a less invasive solution. Evidence showed that the customization of prostheses, combined with a multidisciplinary approach, results in satisfactory aesthetic outcomes and significant improvement in self-esteem, body acceptance, and the quality of social and affective relationships. Furthermore, the areolar reconstruction with prosthesis contributes to the symbolic closure of the disease process and is perceived as a key element in restoring feminine bodily identity. The study concludes that silicone areola prostheses should be recognized as an integral part of post-mastectomy rehabilitation, with therapeutic value and positive emotional impact on reconstructed women.
