Abstract

Introduction: Family planning is an essential Primary Health Care (PHC) strategy, ensured by public policies, aiming to promote sexual and reproductive health, prevent unplanned pregnancies, and reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality. This study describes the academic experience in family planning, highlighting the role of nursing in promoting autonomy and comprehensive care. Methodology: This is a descriptive and observational experience report conducted during the mandatory internship of the Nursing program at the Ramão Vieira Basic Health Unit (UBS) in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, from July to August 2025. The activities involved nursing consultations, individual and collective counseling, monitoring of users using contraceptives, distribution of supplies, and educational activities on sexual and reproductive health. Results and Discussion: Diversity in contraceptive adherence was observed, including acceptance of injectable contraceptives and Implanon, as well as men's interest in participating in the process through vasectomy. Frequent questions involve side effects, method effectiveness, and the irreversibility of tubal ligation, highlighting the need for reliable and ongoing information. Qualified listening and health education are fundamental to debunking myths and strengthening user autonomy. Nursing professionals excelled in providing support, guidance, and promoting accessibility to services. Conclusion: The experience highlighted the strategic role of nursing in consolidating family planning as a reproductive right and an essential public health resource. In addition to expanding technical knowledge, the experience contributed to academic development, developing critical thinking, communication skills, and an ethical commitment to comprehensive care.
