Abstract

This article describes the development of IntelliNav, an indoor navigation system for medium and large shopping centres. The proposal uses Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to monitor users’ locations in real time through indoor positioning technologies such as Wi‑Fi networks and Bluetooth Low Energy, which are widely used because of their availability and low cost, despite being affected by multipath propagation and limited accuracy. The system provides dynamic, personalised and accessible routes, with special attention to older adults and people with disabilities, based on triangulation and scene-analysis methods that allow more accurate position estimates. In addition to improving visitors’ experiences, IntelliNav generates data on foot traffic and shopping patterns, contributing to more effective marketing and management strategies. The results indicate that combining AI and IoT turns the shopping environment into a more inclusive, efficient and data-driven space, benefiting consumers and managers alike.
