THE CHALLENGES OF TEACHING ALGEBRA FROM THE 7TH GRADE OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL II: A PROPOSED TEACHING SEQUENCE BASED ON AN EXPERIENCE REPORT

Abstract

Algebra is often seen as a “watershed” in mathematical learning, representing the transition from concrete thinking (from kindergarten to 6th grade) to abstract thinking (from 7th grade onwards). Its teaching goes far beyond the manipulation of letters and symbols - it is a fundamental tool for the development of logical reasoning and the ability to solve complex problems. However, in practice this transition faces major challenges, ranging from the gaps brought by students from previous years, such as mastery of the four basic operations, to the lack of innovative and/or motivating and challenging teaching methodologies on the part of teachers. This article presents a proposal for a teaching sequence, so that this material can serve as a tool to help teachers in their classes. The idea for this material arose from reports obtained by math teachers from the 7th to the 9th grades, and from my own experience as a 7th grade teacher at the Professor Joanira Del Castillo State School, located in Santana-AP, in the 2025 school year. It is worth noting that the reports were based on the results of internal assessments conducted throughout the academic year.
