Abstract

Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, with a significant impact on global public health. In Brazil, the epidemic follows a cyclical pattern with epidemic periods. Dengue control requires strategies that consider the disease's symptoms, transmission, environmental issues such as climate conditions, and the socioeconomic factors of the affected regions. In this context, effective strategies must be adapted to the specificities of each region, integrating preventive measures and measures to combat the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This study aimed to analyze the spatiotemporal scenario of dengue and the epidemiological profile of those affected in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between 2014 and 2023. The research used data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN/DATASUS) and evaluated confirmed dengue cases according to variables of sex, age group, race/ethnicity, and education level. A total of 127,904 cases were recorded during the analyzed period, predominantly among women, aged 20 to 59, white, and with primary or secondary education. The Metropolitan, Missioneira, and North macroregions had the highest incidence rates. Dengue has expanded into previously non-endemic areas, characterized by a wider distribution, especially since 2020. It is concluded that effective disease control in Rio Grande do Sul requires a multidimensional, interdisciplinary, and regional approach, with the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance, which, together with the health system, can utilize primary care to minimize the problem.
