Study hypothesis: This study assumes that newborn babies are capable of reacting to and interpreting their interlocutors. Objectives: Therefore, we aim to demonstrate the effects of directed speech on newborns by comparing salivary cortisol levels in pre- and post-stress situations; evaluate the effect of directed speech through salivary cortisol indices in stressful situations; analyze the behavioral and metabolic reactions of newborn babies; analyze the behavioral and metabolic reactions of babies to the maternal voice and another female voice (a nurse); and assess the perinatal and health profile of pregnant women and newborns in the maternity ward of the Municipal University Hospital of Taubaté, São Paulo. Method: This quantitative, experimental, and exploratory study will collect salivary cortisol samples from newborn babies before and after the heel prick test. The newborns will be divided into three groups: the first group will have the mother as the interlocutor, the second group will have the nurse, and the third group will have no interlocutor. Mothers will be asked to complete a questionnaire to characterize the dyad's perinatal profile. The infants will be analyzed according to Prechtl's scale for systematizing newborn behavioral states. The data will be statistically analyzed, seeking to correlate the entire sample. Partial results: Twelve infants were observed, saliva samples were collected, and questionnaires were administered. The results are currently undergoing laboratory analysis; however, preliminary observational data indicate that infants react to the mother's voice, demonstrate greater behavioral regulation during skin-to-skin contact, and exhibit different behaviors depending on how the mother manages the stressful situation.
