Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease, also known as paralysis agitans, is a neurodegenerative condition resulting from the destruction of the substantia nigra, responsible for dopamine secretion. It is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, affecting 1 to 3% of this population, with an overall prevalence of approximately 1%. In Brazil, an estimated 200,000 people have the disease, with incidence increasing with age. Considered a multisystem disorder, Parkinson's disease initially presents with motor symptoms, which progress to autonomic, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric dysfunctions. Dementia is common in advanced stages, and approximately 40% of patients suffer from depression. OBJECTIVE: To promote educational activities about Parkinson's disease, its risks, symptoms, prevention, diagnosis, and care to improve the quality of life of patients with these conditions. METHODOLOGY: This is an experience report focusing on elderly individuals assisted by Hope House Senior, focusing on Parkinson's disease. The activity lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes and was facilitated by various resources, including direct exposure, cognitive activities (word searches, tic-tac-toe), followed by meditation, and finally, feedback and a coffee break. RESULTS: Twenty-four elderly individuals, aged between 60 and 80 years, participated in the activity, most of them female. The participants demonstrated considerable engagement, and a series of precautions regarding their condition and appropriate habits were highlighted. A time reserved for meditation was implemented, followed by a relaxed moment and a snack. Throughout the activity, participants reported being welcomed, resulting in positive feedback. CONCLUSION: The activity met the proposed intervention objectives, as the target audience engaged with the activities. Participants were highly focused on learning and understanding the risks, symptoms, prevention, and diagnosis, and the importance of appropriate care was reinforced. The students also improved their communication and health literacy skills. Overall, the project had a positive impact, increasing understanding of Parkinson's disease.
