This article presents the results of our research on the historiography of schooling in the municipality of Almeirim/PA, covering the initial phase of the arrival of the Jesuits, through the phase of Colonel José Júlio and the subsequent resumption of education by religious leaders. In Almeirim, the focus of our research, a municipality in Pará on the banks of the Amazon River, the research demonstrated that, whether “military” or religious, schooling in this municipality effectively occurred in response to private interests. Mercantile-individualist or institutional-spiritual, they aligned educational models with a view to (re)producing private interests, either of the colonel or of the Church. The research involved a bibliographic review, document analysis and fieldwork and was carried out within the scope of PPGE/UFOPA with funding from CAPES.
