This article is based on the premise that there is a relationship between experiences of deprivation of recognition and psychological suffering. Its reference is the Hegelian theory of recognition and the concepts of deprivation of recognition, constructed from this theory, as well as the psychoanalytic concepts of helplessness and psychological pain. A theoretical study was carried out, in which a literature review and analysis of the issue of deprivation of recognition and psychological suffering of black people were carried out, based on the reading of part of Lima Barreto's work, especially the short story O filho da Gabriela and the books Diário de um hospício and Cemitério dos vivos. In this path it was possible in addition to an analysis of the author's illness to corroborate the idea of the construction of an entire social structure that underpins racism, violence and inequality so present in Brazilian society.
