MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH IN THE MANAGEMENT OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a chronic respiratory disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in intermittent hypoxia, sleep fragmentation, and significant systemic repercussions. It is a multifactorial condition, associated with anatomical, functional, metabolic, and behavioral factors, which makes its clinical management challenging when addressed in isolation. This narrative review aims to discuss the multidisciplinary treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, emphasizing the importance of the integrated action of different health professionals in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients. The main diagnostic methods, conventional therapeutic modalities such as the use of CPAP, dental interventions using intraoral appliances, as well as the contribution of areas such as speech therapy, physiotherapy, nutrition, and psychology are addressed. The literature shows that a multidisciplinary approach favors better clinical outcomes, greater adherence to treatment, and a significant improvement in the quality of life of individuals affected by OSA. Furthermore, the importance of individualized therapy, evidence-based practice, and integration among healthcare professionals is highlighted as a cornerstone for the effective management of this condition. The consolidation of multidisciplinary treatment for OSA depends on strengthening professional training, continuing education, and the implementation of integrated care models focused on comprehensive patient care.
