Abstract

Introduction: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder associated with significant social inequalities and barriers to health care access in Brazil. Objective: To analyze the sociodemographic, economic, and health profile of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia in the country. Method: A cross sectional quantitative study was conducted using microdata from the 2019 National Health Survey carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Demographic variables, socioeconomic indicators, access to health services, and perceived social support were investigated. Results: A predominance of males was observed, with a mean age of 45.2 years, marked by significant social vulnerability. Most individuals had low educational attainment and family income per capita of up to one minimum wage. Relevant heterogeneity in self reported prevalence was identified across states, suggesting regional inequalities related to structural barriers and possible underdiagnosis. Care was predominantly provided by the public health system, with a high proportion reporting medication use, although continuity of follow up was irregular. Weak social support networks and depressive symptoms were also identified. Conclusion: Schizophrenia in Brazil is strongly associated with unfavorable social determinants, highlighting the need to strengthen the psychosocial care network and implement intersectoral strategies to promote equitable access and social inclusion
