Abstract

This study examines Jean-Paul Sartre’s postwar political philosophy, tracing its evolution from abstract ontology to a socially engaged existentialism that integrates individual freedom with historical and material conditions. It highlights Sartre’s concept of engagement, emphasizing the inseparability of personal responsibility and collective struggle within socio-political contexts. The analysis explores Sartre’s synthesis of phenomenology and Marxism, addressing tensions between radical freedom and structural constraints, and his critique of capitalism, colonialism, and oppression. Key themes include the interdependence of freedoms, authenticity in collective action, mutual recognition, and the formation of political communities. This work also aims to consider Sartre’s responses to 20th-century events such as World War II and decolonization. Finally, this study engages with critiques of Sartre’s political alignments and assesses his enduring influence on contemporary political theory, suggesting directions for existential political thought in addressing current global crises.
