Abstract

The objective is to evaluate knowledge about the role of Dentistry in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients. The study is characterized as a descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, in which dentists and dental students participated. The study was analyzed and approved by the Research Ethics Committee (5.179.551) and conducted using an electronic questionnaire. Thus, it is observed that a total of 372 volunteers participated in the research, of which 58.9% were dentists and 41.1% were dental students. Of those interviewed, 60.5% said they did not feel qualified to diagnose malignant lesions, with approximately 43% reporting having already performed biopsies of lesions with malignant aspects and 43% reporting having already treated patients who underwent antineoplastic treatment. Approximately 29.8% did not know the most common type of tumor in the oral cavity. This leads to the conclusion that the current knowledge of dentists and students regarding oral cancer points to the need to train professionals in prevention, early diagnosis of the disease, and treatment of adverse effects.
